Can I Paint An Oak Dining Room Table?

I am planning on refinishing my hutch and table. Can I use a pain or does it have to be a stain? I’m not sure what color I want yet, but I want it distressed looking.

  • Of course you can paint it. You need to do one of two things. Either strip off the old varnish down to the wood and prime it then paint it, or rough sand the varnish a bit, then use a primer like Zinsser then your paint. To get the distressed look, people used to bang the wood with chains (of course you have to do that before you paint, or you wil chip the paint good). To get other types of distressed looks, visit your local craft shops and buy the small jars of stuff you dab on in random locations, then wipe just a bit.

I refinish furniture as a hobby now that I’m retired. I would refinish it, it’s messier and would take longer but, anyone can paint.
Strip the old finish off, re sand it and stain it then wax it good.

Sure you can paint it, however oak is a beautiful wood and should be stripped an refinsihed. Painted oak looses its value.

okay this is what i would do, while use you can paint it, i don’t see why you would. you will have food and everything and paint and food don’t go so well together. I would refinish it as in strip the old finish off, re-sand it, and what ever needs to be done to it. or build a new top if you want a challenge and use a food graded stain. think you would like paint chip dinner?

I think you would have to prime it first…then after the top coat, you can sand some worn spots and then put a clear varnish on over it to protect it. the people at the hardware or paint stores will be able to recommend the best types of paint and top coat. you can even do a black base and top a different color. inside the hutch different then outside (if there is glass)…lots of options.
