Sand with a palm sander using about a 120 grit paper then go to a 220 grit till smooth. Stain if yu are wanting to stain use golden oak by Minwax is a nice color. Let dry the wipe down with a tack rag and aply a high gloss polyurathane let dry sand with steel wool then aply another coat of polly and red till the finish smoothness you are looking for is achieved
Get a refinishing kit from HD or Lowes and follow the instructions.
Pick out a stain that you like & rub it on following the instructions. Put a couple of coats of polyurethane on it & you’re good to go.
Good luck. It’s a labor of love but really worth it
I like the HOMER FORMBY products for refinishing and the oil based stains are harder to clean up but give beautiful results
You do not state what condition your table is in or if it needs substantial repair. I would suggest using Formby’s Furniture Cleaner (available at Ace Hardware) first. It will remove all the old wax, any white rings, etc. without damaging the existing finish. Use a rag or 0000 steel wool to apply the Formby’s. If it is so damaged that you have to totally strip it, remember that you will lose the age patina and dry out the wood. Any good stripper (available at paint stores or Home Depot) will do the job–but do it with lots of ventilation. Don’t forget to wash it well with neutralizer (also sold with the strippers). Then make any repairs necessary to the table–I find Gorilla Glue works best–and a good clamp. Then sand off the excess. Sand down the table with 00 steel wool and then 0000 steel wool until you have a satin surface. You will have to decide what type of finish you want–antique satin or glossy shine–that is how you decide if you want to do tung oil, varnish, polyurethane, etc. You will need multiple coats (I like 5!) and don’t forget to use 0000 steel wool to sand between coats. Take your time–it will be worth it!
Dropcloth, stripper, scraper. fine sandpaper, sealer stain, varnish. Then fine steelwool, and paste wax.
You can either strip or sand the old finish off down to the bare wood, tackk off with a tac cloth, apply stain, I used golden oak on my dinning room table, allow stain to dry, apply a coat of poly, let dry and sand lightly with 220 grit sand paper, tack off and apply another coat of poly, I repeated this process four times on the table top and chair seats as they get the most wear, you can check out the oak stains and see which one will match your chairs the closest so you don’t have to do the whole set…we bought our table and chairs and four bar stools at a auction and refinished the whole set and they look like new.
