i live in an old english farm house and purchased an oak dining table in its raw state. i would like to stain it a lovely nut brown colour which looks like its an original from years gone by, but there are so many products on the market at the mo , i just have no idea where to start, i would like it proper brown, not with a yellow tint or reddish tint, a proper brown colou. has any one out there done similar and if so what products did u use. cheers

Go to the underside and do a test portion with a walnut color.
I use it on so many woods, and have refinished most of the things in my home on my own.
The walnut takes on different values depending on the fine-ness of the wood I am staining, but I have a favorite oak table I did using the walnut stain, and it is far and away my best work yet!

Use a dark oak stain – any DIY shop, even Woolworths, sell it.
why on earth would you want to stain oak ,just use a bit of oil,or beeswax,
Please don’t go for the Dark oak. The light oak will age with time and if it is not what you are looking for easier to remedy. You get most wood stains in a good DIY store. Good Luck take your time with it .
dont stain it. OIL it. a wood oil (linseed etc) brings out grain and deepens colour. Read up on this technique, and then wax it after, read up on waxing too, the wax can also be tinted. This wont be old fogey wardrobe brown, but do you really want it?
An oiled and waxed natural oak, will look so different from the raw, and not fake!
Try a Walnut stain. Always good to do a test on a scrap of wood first or the underneath of the table in case you don’t like the color!!! Good Luck
Use a spirit base woodstain, possibly walnut. Try on the underside first, applying it with a ‘ball’ made from an old rag with a piece of sheet or so tied over it. careful how you go, you dont need much stain, just so you can build it up gradually. when its too dark, theres no going back… When you have the technique, slowly build the colour on the top to your taste. The effect of the stain will be to make the surface rough, like wet blotting paper. gently rub this off with very fine wire wool when the stain is dry. Then a good beeswax polish.
Minwax makes a clear poly that will let the natural beauty of the wood come through. The more coats, the darker it will get. We used it on all of the new oak doors & cabinets in our house.
